i dont think we can solely blame the authors for poorly written books. yes most of the work is on them but when you read something that just feels awkward as hell or like the author was roaming free doing what they wanted, that's because the editor(s) were asleep at the wheel. when an author wants to go on a tangent and use overwritten metaphors for every single thing they want to describe, the editor's supposed to say "hey dial that back". when an author indents way too many time to for "dramatic effect" an editor is supposed to say dont do that lol. like where are the line editors lmao?

ok i know translation of ancient lit is inherently anachronistic / all words’ etymologies carry the history of their passage through time and the existence of that history is what makes them anachronistic to ancient lit / and yet translation exists on the line between possible and impossible / the distance in language and time is what necessitates translation / translation of ancient lit must navigate different forms and strengths of anachronism while being made of anachronism. logically i know all of this. it is just that the etymologies of Some words are toooo new and too Visible in their newness. this post brought to you by me being completely thrown by emily wilson’s translation of the iliad using the word ‘mesmerised’. as in franz mesmer the 18th century physician. like there is an entire anachronistic proper noun in there

I love fics that send Shen Yuan back to his world but I really want to see more angst on the initial "waking up". Like, imagine if you just spent 15 or so years of your life in another world. You were actually happy, you had friends (unlike in your past life), got over your emotional intimacy problems and found love; just for everything to stop, be gone. I know this happens to some people who were in comas, but i think it would be a little different because it was actually real.

I was listening to Girl Anachronism (great song btw) and just had the very vivid scene of Shen Yuan going through a bit of a mental break after "coming back to life". He's been living in a different time and different world. How would he even readjust to the modern world?
